Team title: Flare precursorsJoin The Team

Team ID: S3-06

Team Leads:  Larisza Krista (Colorado University, Boulder, USA), larisza.krista@gmail.com

Keywords (impact): Navigation and/or Communications, (Aero)space assets functions, Human exploration

Keywords (activity type):  Understanding, Forecasting

Introduction:

Solar flares have been linked to significant space weather hazards at Earth, including radio blackouts and energetic particle events that can start just minutes after the flare onset. Hence, it is of great importance to identify and predict flare events as early as possible. We investigate flare precursors that have physical connections to the initiation of solar flares. We focus on solar coronal signatures that appear within a few hours in the vicinity of the flare site.

Objectives:

  • Understand the physical relationship between precursors and flares.
  • Investigate false events (precursors unrelated to flares).
  • Study the relationship between precursor events and the properties of the corresponding flares.

Action topics:

  • Forecasting of impulsive events (Flares, CME, SEPs)
