IAGA Working Group V-OBS: Geomagnetic Observations

https://www2.bgs.ac.uk/iaga/vobs/

V-OBS is a working group under IUGG/IAGA Division V “Geomagnetic Observatories, Surveys and Analyses”.

V-OBS has approximately 200 participants worldwide, from magnetic observatories, ground magnetometer stations, geomagnetic satellite missions, and geomagnetic research communities.

V-OBS participants communicate through biennial meetings, biennial workshops and an email-list.

Funding: Participants and their infrastructure are typically funded by government through their institutions. Satellite missions are funded by their space agencies.

V-OBS coordinates all issues related to the operation of geomagnetic observatories.

V-OBS co-operates with INTERMAGNET on technical issues for data acquisition and dissemination.

V-OBS co-operates with V-DAT and the World Data Centres on internationally recognized magnetic data formats.

V-OBS maintains a list of international codes for observatories (currently missing for magnetometer stations).

V-OBS has a strong outreach, education and capacity building competence, e.g. literature, personal contacts for training, and biennial workshops for observatory staff. The workshops also serve for inter-calibration of instruments.
